I’ve been lucky enough to get the occasional message from younger photographers that admire some of my work, and I have to say that it is not only flattering but very inspiring. Every time one of these comes in I always get more motivated to push my work, and to try even harder to give back to younger photographers. Let’s face it the photography and art world in general is not always the easiest to be in. So it’s great to hear from others, especially younger people about your work.
So to any or all of you younger artists out there, I’m sure I can speak on behalf of most of us when I say… Thank you for inspiring us just as much as we might inspire you. Keep pushing your art, and continue sending messages to those that motivate you to be better. It doesn’t go un-noticed and often these messages come when we need that little reminder the most.
I know I’m not the only one that struggles with this from time to time. I run into people, and have friends that are asking themselves this more and more these days. It seems like I should be able to answer that pretty simply. Hell, It seems like you should be able to answer that pretty simply as well. Well today I’m asking, who the F*ck are you… It’s ok to not have the answer just be aware that we should all be asking ourselves that from time to time, if only to remind ourselves of who we really want to be.
Last week I was asked a simple, but great question… “Why do you shoot personal work?”, by a fellow photographer and friend that has started Self Assignment. Like many photographers I’m sure, I dove into the pre-written set of answers for things like this but as I was about to hit send I thought about it a bit more and realized what a great question this was. I’ll let you head over to the site to check out my answer, but I think for all artists we should all ask ourselves this at one point and really step back and think about it. Don’t just pull out the “I do it because it helps me better my work” crap this time, and really ask yourself if the work you are doing is what you really want to be putting out there. If you are shooting personal work or doing personal projects are you learning from them? Are you losing sleep over them? Does it matter?… Maybe I’m looking too far into this but it was a good thing for me to reflect on this week, so many thanks to Self Assignment for the great question and for sharing my thoughts as well the responses and work of other great artists.
